We have joined a motley crew of adventurers who decided to cross the ocean in search of Vinland and its rumoured riches: to trade for, if possible; if not, to take by force. So it came to pass that this small party found its way to this new found land.

Iskjaldi Valdemarsson was born in Uppsala to a carpenter and builder Valdemar Iilvarsson and his wife Tandis. At the age of four the boy was kidnapped by a raiding party of Gauths and sold at the market in Holmgard to a rich Rus merchant from Kiev who was trading anywhere from Birka to Prague to Constantinople.

Iskjaldi spent fourteen years in Kiev as a thrall taking care of the house and working in the warehouses. Occasionally he accompanied his master on trading trips to the East and West, where he served as interpreter, bodyguard and crewman. At the age of nineteen he discovered his family still lived in Uppsala and contacted them.

He found out that in addition to his brother Algmundr he also had a sister by the name of Ulldis. The family was able to pull together enough money to buy him off from the merchant. Using the knowledge of peoples and lands encountered on trips all over Europe, Iskjaldi went to Norway and joined a raiding party of the Danes that paid off well.

At that time the news of discovery of Vinland far in the West reached Norway.

Son of Anders Guttormsson and Sigrid Håkansdtr, brother of Håkan and Botulf.
As the second son, Hakon could inherit none of his family’s wealth from their great farm, so he has taken to the life of a Viking to make his fortune. This decision was made even easier when a fight with his brother Håkan, in which Håkan was nearly killed, had Hakon banished from the principality of Borg for ten years by chief Guttorm Dagfinnsson, and declared an outlaw to be killed on sight until his sentence was served. With a few kin accompanying his travels Southward to the lands across Bergen, he, his sturdy ship, and the 10 hands to crew her had made allies with Torsten Skeldulvsson, a local chief in the surrounding area.

Also an aspiring merchant, Hakon would very much like to one day do some trading with the Frisians and the Jutes; possibly doubling his wealth by returning to Bergen with their renown goods to sell.

The Torvik slave boy.
Much of the labour and tasks such as lifting, carrying, maintaining, and some crafting/building are laid to him, and he does them gladly. Having come a long way from the sands of his birthplace in the East, thrall life has had its hard times between the many masters he has known since childhood; many of them, unforgiving as an icy Nordic wind. But in this small Vinland settlement, where every able body holds value, he feels the closest he ever has to freedom among the tight-knit society of Torvik; where his arm, strong from his work, had earned him favour among the warriors, and soon after, the rest of the village.

His name, Einar, was branded on him at a time in his youth between owners in Finland, by a blacksmith, in mockery of the way he always wants to play with swords.

Today, he is now nearly indistinguishable from the Drengr when he stands in the ranks, outfitted as a free warrior, among the group he has come to call family.

Ulf-Ragnar Ericsson is the second son of Eric Rasmussen, a low-level jarl on the small island of Thuro in Danemark.

Ulf-Ragnar has spent his entire life as a Viking; perfectly delighted in raiding and the capture of slaves for sale, and has accumulated many great a bounty from his long life of plundering.

On occasion, he will find himself with a new wife, never able to keep any one for very long. Whether this is due to his lifestyle or a wandering eye is unclear, but such questions take inferiority to finding if he can ever be satisfied with his personal wealth and status.

Son of Bjorn Bjarnason, a wealthy farmer, smith and landowner in the Laxardal region of Iceland. Being the eldest, he stood to inherit a great deal. However, he was outlawed after a particularly nasty feud with an ill-mannered neighbouring family, which ended in a bloody battle in which Ulfhedin was ambushed by 4 men. He killed 3 of the men and injured the fourth but received several wounds himself.
Although everyone knew the area was better off without those slain, the family refused to accept compensation for the slain and thereby banishing Ulfhedin from the region.Ulfhedin then joined a group of traders with a ship in Borgarfjord, and on their voyage, they were attacked by vikings. Every last man was slain and their goods taken, except for Ulfhedin, who managed to mortally wound 2 vikings before he was captured. The leader of the viking raiding party made an offer he couldn’t refuse: join us or die.
So he joined this group and spent several years raiding small settlements, gaining great honor and riches as a mercenary and occasionally paying tribute to the kings of England, Norway and Denmark.Eventually Ulfhedin tired of this life so he took what wealth he could and decided to escape the spread of the new faith by settling in Greenland and becoming a smith and farmer like his father. Unfortunately, his voyage did not take him far, for his ship was wrecked on a skerry during a great storm and all his possessions lost to the sea. But luckily, he was saved from drowning by a madman towing a ship through the water with his teeth.
This is how he joined Torvik.

Talivaldis was born in the town of Jersika, Lettgalia (present day Latvia), by the river Daugava, which was a trade route from Birka to Constantinople. His parents, Antons and Aldona managed a small business venture, where Antons traded and sold his own jewelry for fine fabrics from far off lands. Aldona was the seamstress.

After Antons was killed by a raiding party of Semigallians, (a local tribe across the river), Talivaldis continued in his father’s artistry. After being widowed, and in search of love, Talivaldis followed women around the world until he reached the shores of Vinland.

Talivaldis returned to his homeland where we periodically receive messengers from him.

Fish Eriksson, son of Eric the Skold, has taken a longship with his cousin Leif and left the village in search of riches in the lands to the west.

Fish Eriksson so named because of his dramatic rescue of many friends when their longship fell into difficulties.

Taking the bow rope in his teeth he swam to shore dragging the boat behind him, saving all aboard with his amazing swimming abilities.
